The global pandemic was the first catastrophic occurrence that affected almost everyone on the planet in some unexpected way. On the business front, terms such as “pivoting,” the “new normal” and “working from home” were on all our minds whether we liked it or not. Entrepreneurs, business owners, and top executives, for the most part, are workaholics. But is this necessary to succeed? Part of the reason for this is the passion they have for their enterprise. The other reason, too often, is because they believe the enterprise would not or could not keep running without their involvement.
Are you frustrated by employees or associates whose work or efforts are not to your standards, level of passion or competency? Is this causing you to feel as though you are the only one that can get things done right? Nothing is more disheartening for a high achiever, and especially a business owner, than feeling as though no one can do it exactly like you.
People are your greatest asset and you are dependent upon them in your business on many levels. Whether you have employees or subcontractors or are a services or products business, you cannot escape people. Your customers are people. Your employees and suppliers are people. The bottom line is a business cannot run effectively or survive without people.
Have you been told that your expectations are too high? For some business owners, this may make you feel that you should lower your expectations due to pressure felt by these comments, resulting in managing in a “settle-for” mindset to the detriment of your business or what you envision. Another consideration about expectations is in what you as the business owner expect of others and then what you practice and demonstrate to others.
